KPK to provide corruptor list for KPU

The list will help KPU to identify former corruption convicts.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) welcomed General Election Commission (KPU) regulation (PKPU) No. 20/2018 which contains ban to former corruption convicts to contest in legislative elections. The regulation has finally promulgated by Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

In order to support the regulation, KPK pledged to help KPU by providing list of corruptor names. Although KPU has not requested it yet, the anti-graft institution expected the list can help KPU in selecting those who register as prospective legislative members in 2019 election.

“No (request) yet, but we will give corruptor names list,” said KPK deputy chairperson Basaria Panjaitan on Thursday (July 5).

Basaria said KPK strongly supported the ban to former corruption convicts to contest in legislative elections. She assessed it was very inappropriate if corruption convicts and other crime cases convicts become representatives of people, either at the district or city, provincial to the central government.

KPK has processed 739 people in corruption cases. Some of the cases have legally enforced. From the number, there were 144 members of House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) that snared by the institution.

Previously, Ministry of Law and Human Rights refused to enact PKPU No. 20/2018. The ministry considered the ban on former corruption convicts to be legislative candidates was contrary to Law No. 7/2017 on General Elections.
