REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Communications and Informatics temporarily blocked Tik Tok application in order to protect society, especially children. The China-based music-video platform and social network is considered to have violated the content regulation.
According to Minister Communications and Informatics Rudiantara, the government would allow Tik Tok if the developer has removed negative contents in its application. He lauded Tik Tok goodwill to show its commitment to protect the society by coming to the ministry office a day after the blocking.
Rudiantara asked Tik Tok to filter its contents to prevent the recurring of similar incident. He also urged Tik Tok to establish representative office in Indonesia to ease coordination.
Senior Vice President Corporate Strategy Beijing Bytedance Technology, Zhen Liu, asserted that Tik Tok will follow local regulations. He said the company will clean negative contents.
"It is important for us to follow and respect values in Indonesia," he said.
Meanwhile, according to Ministry Communications and Informatics expert staff, Donny Budi Utoyo, in every platform, ideally every applications have two things in its term of use. He said a platform must have community guidelines while managing the industry and the users, said Donny on Wednesday (July 4).
In addition, Donny said the platform users actually should have the ability to sort and select information. However, Currently, Indonesia is in process to be ideal with those things.
“So, it’s important to have digital literacy,” said Donny added.
Donny said Indonesia is still moving forward to the ideal condition. During the process towards ideality in internet, protection is needed for society. One of the efforts is with the blocking of negative contents, including in Tik Tok application.
Ministry Communications and Informatics has temporarily blocked Tik Tok on Tuesday (June 3), following a coordination meeting with Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, also with Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
Tik Tok was launched in 2016 by Zhang Yiming, who is also the founder of Beijing-based news and information platform Toutiao. The app was brought to Indonesia in September 2017 by tech company ByteDance.
The app allows its users to create short music videos. To create content, users need to pick background music from the app's music library first. After that, the app will record them doing whatever they want to do for 60 seconds. Users can also make their video more interesting by inserting a selection of stickers, filters or effects, like shivering or shaking on it.
