REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- South Sumatera province is accelerating road repair in a number of road segments that will be passed by vehicles during Lebaran (Eid) homecoming. Head of Department of Public Works of Bina Marga and Spatial Planning of South Sumatera Province, Muchtar, said that of the total 1,600.18 kilometers of provincial roads, there were 185.12 kilometers of lightly damaged roads.

Meanwhile, there were another 45.85 kilometers of heavily damaged roads that require immediate repair. "Currently, some provincial roads are being repaired to face the upcoming period of homecoming and backflow of Lebaran," he stated in Palembang on Thursday.

He noted that the road repair was aimed at restoring the function of the roads and not to improve road capacity as the provincial government has a limited budget of Rp910 billion. The budget included a special allocation fund from the central government, amounting to Rp93 billion.

"This budget is considered less to repair all damaged roads, because the existing budget is also utilized for the construction and repair of bridges in South Sumatra province," he remarked.

The roads were damaged because of the construction of Light Rail Transit (LRT) infrastructure projects and bridges that will be used during the upcoming Asian Games in August 2018.

Meanwhile, construction of infrastructure for the 18th Asian Games in Palembang City will be completed and become operational in June, Governor of South Sumatra Province Alex Noerdin revealed. All tools for the climbing venues have arrived in the city, but it will be installed piece by piece, the governor stressed on Tuesday (May 22).

Moreover, all facilities for the shooting venue have also been installed. However, before becoming operational, the venue operator still awaits the approval of the Sports and Youths Ministry.
