Earthquake hits Larantuka

Earthquake shakes Larantuka at the wee hours on Saturday.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- A tectonic quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale shook Larantuka in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara province at the wee hours on Saturday.

According to the Geology, Climatology and Meteorology Agency (BMKG) the epicenter of the quake was at 8.15 degrees South Latitude and 123.28 degrees East Longitude at a depth of 12 kilometer.

Based on a shake map the impact of the quake that occurred at 00:09:38 was weak and felt in Latantuka at an intensity of I-II MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale.

Head of BMKG office in Kupang, the provincial capital , Hasanuddin said several people were reported to feel the tremor.

He called on the people to remain calm especially those living in the coastal region of Larantuka as the quake has no potential to cause a tsunami.

Based on the depth of its hypocenter the quake was a shallow quake caused by activity of local fault lines.
