REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON --  The Indonesian government will support Guatemala's efforts to develop sustainable palm oil industry, Indonesian Ambassador to Mexico Yusra Khan said. He  made the remarks during a meeting with President of Guatemala Palm Oil Producers Association (GREPALMA) Jose Santiago Molina at the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City on Tuesday.

The ambassador shared the information with Molina on the Indonesian government's steps to address various allegations from certain international organizations that harm the Indonesian palm oil industry.

Yusra has also asked Malaysian Ambassador to Mexico, Mohammad Azhar bin Mazlan, to join the meeting with the GREPALMA president. The association has considered the meeting with the Indonesian and Malaysian ambassadors as important, as nearly 90 percent of the global palm oil production comes from the two Southeast Asian nations.

The association is worried about the European Union (EU)'s announcement on stopping the use of palm oil-based biofuel in the EU market starting from 2021.

The ambassador revealed that Indonesia may provide technical training and capacity building to palm oil growers in Guatemala. During the meeting, Yusra also briefed Molina on the capacity of downstream palm oil industry in Indonesia, the Indonesian policy on sustainable palm oil (ISPO), and the oil palm replanting policy.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian ambassador called on palm oil-producing countries in Central and Latin Americas to jointly campaign for sustainable palm oil industry. Yusra further asked Guatemala to join the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) and encourage palm oil-producing countries in Central and Latin Americas to join the association.
