BMKG urges people to search official information

Latest official information on earthquake can be accessed via BMKG's Twitter.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged the people to search information related to earthquake from trusted sources. The advice was given to tackle widely circulated hoaxes following a strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake that jolted Lebak, Banten, on Tuesday. The tremor was felt  as far away as Jakarta, which is 153 kilometres away and also in Tasikmalaya, West Java, some 366 kilometres from the epicenter.

"For all people who wanted to search the latest information related to earthquake and tsunami, please contact BMKG which always open 24 hours service," said head of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Early Warning Information, Daryono.

He said, people also can obtain complete and the latest official information also via call center at 021- 6546316 and also through BMKG's social media account Twitter @infobmkg and official website on www.bmkg.go.id.

On Tuesday night, hoax news on a possible stronger earthquake was spreading and causing panic in the society. According to BMKG, no technology existed yet to precisly predict when, where, and how strong an earthquake will happen. 

Meanwhile, a 5.1 magnitude aftershock rocked Lebak regency, Banten on Wednesday (January 24) at 13.31 Western Indonesia Standard Time. Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG, Mochammad Riyadi said the epicenter located 72 kilometres Southwest Lebak with hipocenter of 42 meters and has no tsunami potential.
