REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) has called to hold an emergency summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss the Rohingya humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, a member of the regional grouping.

"We hope Mr Jokowi (President Joko Widodo) would take the initiative to make hotline calls to ASEAN leaders and invite them for an emergency ASEAN summit," PKS President Mohamad Sohibul Iman noted in a statement, here, Saturday.

The global community has almost lost all patience waiting for Nobel Laurette Aung San Suu Kyi to take concrete steps to stop violence against the Rohingya ethnic minority, he stated.

"Until now, we are still receiving news about the burning of Rohingyas' homes, and the number of casualties continues to increase. This is very sad, as it has been going on for more than two weeks, and no concrete actions have been taken by the Myanmar government (to end the atrocities)," he remarked.

The PKS leader lauded the actions taken by Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi who had visited Myanmar and Bangladesh to offer solutions for resolving the crisis.

However, he believed that there should be a time limit and an evaluation on how far the violence has ended.

The political party's Crisis Center for Rohingya is currently studying and evaluating the developments in Rakhine, home to over one million Muslim minority.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI) has urged the ASEAN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to seek a solution to the humanitarian tragedy affecting the Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar.

The ASEAN and OIC should take active part in finding a fair, comprehensive, and integrated solution to resolve the issue related to the Rohingya ethnic group conflict, ICMI Deputy Chairman Priyo Budi Santoso remarked.

Handling the tragedy is also part of the responsibilities of the ASEAN and OIC member states.
