REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated his sympathy to Ahok after the Jakarta Governor was sentenced for two years of imprisonment in a blasphemy case on Tuesday (May 9).

"I stated my sympathy for the verdict. But we agree to accept all the judges' decision. They who held demonstration also said they would agree to whatever the decision," said Jusuf Kalla in his office on Tuesday (May 9).

Kalla said Ahok had a chance to use his right to appeal on the next session. He emphasized that the verdict was not a victory nor a satisfaction of a certain party.

On Tuesday morning, panel of judges sentenced Ahok for two years of imprisonment. Ahok was guilty for doing a blasphemy to al-Maidah verse 51.

"Proven guilty for conducting blasphemy, two years of imprisonment," said the judge in South Jakarta on Tuesday (May 9).

Panel of judges led by Dwiarso Budi Santiarso said there were several burdensome considerations such as did not plead guilty. Secondly, Ahok behaviour had wrecked religious harmony.

There was also an easing consideration that Ahok had been cooperative in joining the trial. Meanwhile, Ahok and his legal team agreed to make appeal.
