Whirlwinds hit in Indonesian cities in the peak of rainy season

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Whirlwinds hit different cities of Indonesia in recent days, damaging tens of houses and wreaking losses running into millions. The disasters occurred in Sukabumi District of West Java Province, Lebak District of Banten Province and Jembrana District of Bali, Antara reported here on Friday.

A whirlwind in Surade Subdistrict of Sukabumi District damaged houses and forced nine people to evacuate. The Head of Emergency and Logistics Sector of Sukabumi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, Usman Susilo, said his institution distributed aid such as tableware and toiletries.

Meanwhile, a whirlwind in the sub-districts of Cibeber and Gunungkencana of Lebak sub-district led to four houses collapsing while another four were damaged. "There was no casualty in the disasters that occurred in the last two days," the Head of Emergency Sector for the Lebak Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, Madias, informed.

Madias advised that people must stay alert about any possible whirlwind during the peak rainy season. The agency has also distributed food supplies such as rice, noodles, instant food and mineral water. Madias informed that his institution considers 25 sub-districts in Lebak as being prone to disasters as these were located in hilly and mountainous areas or by the river bank.

Two houses in Jembrana District of Bali were also damaged when a whirlwind toppled a tree on Thursday evening. The tree hit a house belonging to Gede Budi Sedana. Some furniture was damaged.

The strong wind also caused damage to the roof of I Wayan Sudiatmika's house. Roofs of nine houses in Mendoyo sub-district were also damaged. The District Head of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, asked people to stay alert about the extreme weather conditions that may trigger whirlwinds. He also urged the disaster mitigation agency and the social board to coordinate intensively to mitigate the impact of any disaster.

The Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency will stay alert around the clock to handle any disaster impact and assist people. The agency will monitor the weather situation to respond in case of any exigency.

The Head of Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, Dewa Indra, informed that the institution will deploy teams for all districts to monitor strong wind and heavy rain that can uproot trees or trigger a land slide as well as flooding.
