Indonesia still suspends chick import from China

Since November 28, 2016, Indonesia suspended the import of day old chick for broodstock and grandparent stock from seven countries to prevent H5N1.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Head of Quarantine Board of Ministry of Agriculture, Banun Harpini, confirmed that Indonesia still forbid the import of Day Old Chick (DOC) or a one-day-old chicks from China. It means that Indonesian people do not need to worry about the H5N1 outbreak that hit the country.  "We do not imported DOC from Cihna," told Banun to Republika.co.id, Monday.

However, Indonesia imported poultry feathers used for the shuttlecock manufacturing. Banun said that the people do not need to worry because H5N1 virus would be dead on the feathers that has been heated to a certain temperature.

Banun explained, the feathers which are usually used to produce shuttlecock has been through a heating process. When it come to Indonesia, the feathers are ready to be assembled into a shuttlecock.

As information, since November 28, 2016, Indonesia suspended the import of DOC for broodstock and grandparent stock from seven countries to prevent H5N1. The countries were the Netherlands, Japan, India, France, Finland, Romania and Sweden.

According to Banun, the countries were included into the list of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) which being attacked by H5N1. He claimed that he immediately took a stance when he received the notification from OIE.  "We certainly do stoppage immediately," he said.

In addition, coordination and communication with the representatives of Indonesia in various world runs well. It helps the Quarantine Board to monitor development of health issues in each country.  

He said that he would immediately stop the import whenever he received reports of a country hit by an outbreak harm the importers.  "Even if OIE has not sent the notification, when there was a notification from the embassy, ​​we will stop (the import)," he said.
