Suspects of coup plot plan to hijack 212 rally: National Police

Early in the Friday morning, Jakarta Metro Police caught Ahmad Dhani, Eko Suryo Santjojo, Adityawarman, Kivlan Zein, Firza Husein, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, Ratna Sarumpaet, Sri Bintang Pamungkas, Jamran, Rizal, and Alvin Indra on allegation of coup plot.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta Metro Police has questioned 11 people on suspected coup plot on Friday (12/2). About 7 people were named as suspect and three of them were detained. "We have to arrest them early in morning on Friday in order to prevent any party to mobilize large number of mass who will stage 212 rally," National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said at the Hearing with Commission III of the House of the Representatives on Monday.

According to Tito, there were fear on the possibility of twisted news regarding the arrest of activists. If the activists were arrested two days prior the 212 rally, it could be seen as an attempt to tackle the rally. "It will be very dangerous, so we decide to arrest them early in the morning, before the rally," he said.

Tito explained the police is commited to prevent any disruption on the 212 rally. He was fully aware of the National Movement to Guard the Indonesian Council of Ulama's Fatwa's (GNPF MUI) intention as a pure movement to ensure law enforcement regarding suspect of alleged religious blasphemy, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. "Therefore, their intention to pray and rally had to be escorted and the arrestment of the activists was to secure the event," he said.

Tito reiterated the police did not want any disruption on the December 2 rally. He feared it would harm image of Islam and Muslims who wanted to pray at that day. "The activist planned to hijack the mass and bring them to occupy the People's Consultative Assembly's building," he said.

The intelligent indicated the activists aimed to coup through special session of the People's Consultative Assembly, Tito said. 

Early in the Friday morning, Jakarta Metro Police caught Ahmad Dhani, Eko Suryo Santjojo, Adityawarman, Kivlan Zein, Firza Husein, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, Ratna Sarumpaet, Sri Bintang Pamungkas, Jamran and Rizal. Alvin Indra also arrested in different place. Among them, Sri Bintang Pamungkas, Jamran and Rizal were detained. They were is charged with Article 107 of Criminal Code and Laws of ITE.
