Kalla: HMI members ready to face judicial process with one condition

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Jusuf Kalla said here on Friday that members of the Association of Islamic Students (HMI) were ready to face any judicial proceedings if they were really found to be perpetrators of rioting that happened at the November 4 demonstration. "If there is any incriminating evidence, the HMI are certainly ready to face any judicial process. If unquestionable evidence is found, (they will be ready)," he added.

The Vice President himself is an HMI alumni and had been chief of the Makassar chapter of HMI at one stage. HMI general chairman Mulyadi P Tamsir and secretary general Ami Jaya as well as a number of HMI cadres have been arrested by the police in connection with the riot on November 4.

The police arrived at the PB HMI secretariat on Jalan Sultan Agung No 25a at midnight on Monday to catch them. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police, meanwhile, also named five HMI members as suspects in connection with the demonstration on Friday last week.

The police arrested II, AJ, RM, RR and MRD for having allegedly attacked police officers on duty, based on testimonies from several witnesses and after analyzing the recordings from hidden camera that caught the incident. The students have been charged with violating Article 214 in conjunction with Article 212 of the Criminal Code and face seven years in jail, if proven guilty.
