Govt to start building SEZ of Morotai in North Maluku

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (Kemenpupera) is building roads at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Morotai in North Maluku province.

Development is targeted to open access for the location of the SEZ to the port, the airport and the source of raw materials.

"They will construct water treatment plant," said the Head of the Budget and Public Infrastructure Planning Center BPIW Kemenpupera Diyaksa Suharto in a press release received on Wednesday (1/5).

It is well known that Morotai is included in the Strategic Development Area 30 that is WPS-Masohi Ambon. Morotai is one of the leading region of Indonesia because of its advantage in dealing directly with the international trade lanes and major sea lanes to Australia and New Zealand.

With these conditions, Morotai has good chance of becoming the gateway and logistics hub as well as a center for global trade activity and new economic centre in Eastern Indonesia.

Special Economic Zones (SEZ) formation of Morotai, he said, is one of the facilitation of the government in an effort to accelerate the development of regional growth centres in North Maluku.

 After SEZ is built it will be an asset as breakthrough development of the region's economic growth and create jobs. The business sector is focusing on Morotai’s fishing processing industry, manufacturing, logistics, and tourism.

 

Besides it being set to become SEZ, Morotai also been named as one of ten National Tourism Strategic Area. Determination is supported by the opening of direct flights to Morotai and April 2016.

"Local governments must be prepared to receive many guests from outside the region and from abroad," said Suharto.

Head of the Social and Cultural Planning Agency (Bappeda) District Morotai, Ikbal Assagof mentions several problems facing the region. Among these organizations are not stable and limited human resources.

"Even Morotai is an area with huge potential in terms of tourism, because there are dozens of attractions that are ready to be developed," he said.

In addition, in the region there are dozens of uninhabited islands to be used as a resort and tourist sites serving wonderful marine panorama.
