Thousands of homebound motorcyclists join free Idul Fitri rides

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Thousands of motorcyclists heading their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri Islamic festivity joined a free ride organized by the transportation ministry at Tanjung Priok seaport, here, Wednesday.

They boarded MV Dobonsolo towards Tanjung Emas seaport, Semarang, Central Java, Director General for Sea Transportation Bobby Mamahit of the transportation ministry said in a press statement.

MV Dobonsolo transported 1,334 motorcycles and 2,655 motorcyclists and other passengers on Wednesday morning.

Other trips were organized by using the Indonesian Navy's warship Surabaya and private-owned MV Wihan Sejahtera with a total capacity of carrying 13 thousand motorcycles and 23 thousand passenters.

On July 11, 2015, the ministry deployed MV Dobonsolo and Warship Surabaya to take homebound travelers using motorcycles to Semarang and Surabaya (East Java Province).

Until Wednesday noon, a total of 2,781 motorcycles and 7,216 passengers joined the free rides.

The ministry provided numerous facilities for them, such as insurances for passengers and their motorcycles, medical services, dinner and breakfast, T-shirts and face masks, Internet Wifi network, Islamic preaching.

The ship crews have been told to prioritize safety and security during the trips.

The free rides have been offered to motorcyclists to minimize traffic accidents and ease the traffic congestion that usually occur during the Idul Fitri exodus.
