Indonesian, Colombian ministers discuss Aceh conflict

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L. P. Marsudi and her Colombian counterpart, Maria Angela Hollguin Cuellar, discussed how the Aceh conflict was resolved to adopt suitable methods to encourage peace in Colombia.

According to a press statement received here on Wednesday, the two ministers discussed Indonesia's experience in resolving the conflict in Aceh and other bilateral issues.

Marsudi was accompanied by experts who were involved in the settlement of the situation in the province.

With regard to establishing peace, the Colombian government has expressed interest in learning about Indonesia's experience in finding solutions to the Aceh conflict.

At the bilateral meeting, both foreign affairs ministers discussed ways to bring about peace in Colombia, in addition to Indonesia's experience in resolving the conflict in Aceh.

On the occasion, the Colombian minister also expressed support for Indonesia's nomination as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2019-2020 period.

Moreover, they also spoke about organizing an official visit of Minister Cuellar to Indonesia to frame a few cooperation documents.

Among the documents that will be signed by both parties are memoranda of understanding on technical cooperation to combat the production, manufacture and distribution of narcotics and psychotropic drugs and their derivatives, as well as on cooperation in information exchange on financial intelligence to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.

Besides the Colombian minister, Marsudi met with the country's presidential affairs office of international cooperation and the high commissioner for peace affairs, as well.

Indonesia and Colombia were the coordinators of the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) for the 2011 to 2013 period.

Furthermore, the partnership between the two countries in acting as the coordinators of FEALAC reaped results such as the Uluwatu Declaration, which encourages economic cooperation, technical cooperation and the establishment of better connectivity, as well as cooperation in the fields of tourism, education, research, and in tackling global issues among member countries of FEALAC.
