REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG -- Floodwaters reaching a height of up to a meter have inundated 3,060 houses in 10 sub-districts in Tangerang District, Banten Province, since Sunday, February 8.

"The worst-hit village is Gelam Jaya in Pasar Kemis sub-district, but the local inhabitants have decided to stay in their homes," Head of the Tangerang Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) Teteng Jumara said on Tuesday, February 10.

Some 40 personnel have been deployed to handle the flood crisis and assist in the evacuation efforts, he noted. Flood emergency command posts have been set up in Balaraja, Pasar Kemis, and Kosambi to help the flood victims. Four tons of rice have been distributed to the flood-affected areas.

A public kitchen has been set up in Gelam Jaya in Pasar Kemis sub-district. Health command posts have also been established in Pasar Kemis and Balaraja, respectively.

Several rivers, including Cimanceuri River and several tributaries of Cisadane River, have overflown as a result of the incessant downpours over the last three days.

Floods have affected the sub-districts of Pasar Kemis, Kronjo, Sepatan, Kosambi, Teluknaga, Balaraja, Kelapa Dua, Tigaraksa, Rajeg, and Sukamulya. No casualties have so far been reported.

The floods that have hit Tangerang since Sunday, have currently spread to wider areas as further downpours continue on Tuesday. "Motorbikes can no longer ply on the flooded roads as the water levels have risen," Dwi Lestari, a Tangerang inhabitant, said.

At least 400 houses in the Total Persada housing complex, Periuk, were flooded on Monday. The flooding has spread to Ciledug area and the Puri Beta housing complex in Karang Tengah area.

The Tangerang disaster mitigation office has deployed 300 personnel to help evacuate the flood victims, with the assistance of military and police personnel as well as the volunteers.
