REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The anti-corruption body is considering seeking assistance from the Indonesian Military (TNI) to bring in witnesses for questioning as part of investigations into the case that involves Commissioner General Budi Gunawan.

"We will consult with the president about whether we can involve other agencies if our colleagues in the police cannot guarantee to help the commission," Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Bambang Widjojanto said here on Thursday.

Police witnesses again failed to meet the KPK's summons for questioning on Tuesday (January 27) over the alleged case of corruption regarding suspicious transactions that involves Chief of the National Police Education Institute, Commissioner General Budi Gunawan.

Three police witnesses were scheduled to testify in connection with Gunawan's alleged involvement in the graft case.

While Insp. Gen. Andayono, who is the regional police chief of East Kalimantan, and 1st Adj. Insp. Revindo Taufik Gunawan Siahaan gave no reason for failing to meet the KPK's summons, retired Brig. Gen. Heru Purwanto said he was ill, KPK's Head of News Reporting and Publication, Priharsa Nugraha, revealed.

Insp. Gen. Andayono had failed to meet the summons on January 20, as well, stating that he had to return to Balikpapan after receiving a report about a sinking ship.

Retired Brig. Gen. Heru Purwanto had also failed to the meet the summons on the same day, but had given no reason for it.

According to article 112 of the Civil Procedures Code, if a person concerned fails to meet the summons for the third time, investigators could bring him/her in.

Moreover, Widjojanto pointed out that the KPK will exercise caution in asking for the TNI's assistance.

"Of course, the KPK must be very careful and adhere to rules. We do not want to be reckless," he remarked.

He further noted that the anti-graft body had also spoken with Deputy Chief of the National Police Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti about efforts to bring in police witnesses.

"We spoke with the deputy chief of the national police yesterday, but we discussed other issues. If I am not mistaken, the deputy chief has also had talks with the Kompolnas (the National Police Commission). We will ask for commitment and preparedness," he stated.
