Jokowi: Indonesia to maintain its free and active foreign policy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian new President Joko Widodo stated during his first state of nation address on Monday that Indonesia would maintain its free and active foreign policy. 

"As a country with the third largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia will continue its free and active foreign policy," he emphasized after the inauguration.

He further explained that the foreign policy was for the sake of national interest, to create the world order based on freedom, peace, and social justice principles. 

"We want to be a great nation with its great civilization and creativity, then continuously contribute to global civilization. We also want to stand up with other nations with respect and dignity," the former governor of Jakarta elaborated.

During the speech he also thanked foreign guests of honor who attended his inauguration. 

"On behalf of the people and government of Indonesia, i would like to thank all heads of state and government of for attending this event," he added. 

Among others, the presidential inauguration was attended by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Ogjio, Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Tun Razak, Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott, and US Secretary of State John F Kerry. The other guests were also former Prime Minister of Japan Yasuo Fukuda, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Tanasak Patimapragorn, and Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong.
