Data shows 276 homebound travelers die in a week

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ketupat Jaya Operation held by National Police reported there were thousands people became victims of accidents in homebound trips, while 276 others died. Head of Public Relation in National Police, Com Agus Riyanto said those victims died in a week.

"At least 1,656 victims suffered minor injuries, while 435 people were seriously injured. In total 1,331 accidents happened during this operation," Riyanto said on Saturday.

Riyanto said two wheeled vehicles or motorcycles became the largest contributors to the number of accidents. Data shows there were 1,897 motorcycles involved during the homebound travel season. Accidents also involved 426 private cars, 109 buses, 232 MPV and 76 non motorized vehicles, such as bicycles.

Riyanto said the main cause of those were sleepy drivers (319 cases), negligence because drivers did not keep the distance between cars (200 cases), exceeded limit of speed (156 cases),  broken traffic lights (44 cases) and drivers who consumed alcohol before driving (37 cases).
