Sultan Hamengku Buwono X resigns from Golkar party

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA - Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, the sultan who is also the governor of the Yogyakarta special region has resigned from Golkar Party. He said he would submit the documents on Monday and it would not be late as the deadline would be on Wednesday. 

"I have reported my resignation to Golkar Party general chairman Aburizal Bakrie. This is done as a follow up of the passage of the bill of the region`s special status," he said on Friday.

He said the law on the special status of the region states that Sultan and Paku Alam are not allowed to be members of a political party as conditions for being a governor and a vice governor of the region respectively and "therefore I have returned my membership card to Golkar Party which symbolizes my resignation from Golkar Party."

Regarding the documents required for becoming the governor of the region Sultan said they have been complete and "I plan to submit them to the regional legislative assembly on Monday. I will submit them along with Paku Alam IX as vice governor of Yogyakarta."

The House of Representatives recently passed the bill on the special status of the region ending disputes on whether the governor of the region must be elected. Based on the new law the governor are automatically held by the traditional leader of the Javanese sultanate and while the vice governor by the sultanate`s principality leader Paku Alam.
