REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- East Java province recorded 0.52 percent deflation in February 2015, fueled by a decline in the prices of several food commodities.

"The deflation suggests that East Java managed to control the prices," Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Office in East Java Province M. Sairi Hasbullah stated here on Monday (2/3).

The deflation indicated that the East Java Provincial Inflation Control Team (TPID) had worked well to keep the inflation in check, he said.

Two out of the seven spending groups recorded deflation, he noted.

"The spending groups that saw deflation were transportation, communication, and financial services, which recorded 2.23 percent deflation, and food commodities, which saw 1.36 percent deflation," he noted.

Meanwhile, the increase in clothing prices contributed 0.69 percent to inflation, followed by processed foods, beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco 0.37 percent, and the group of housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel 0.30 percent.

"Healthcare contributed 0.24 percent, and the lowest inflation was recorded in the group of education, recreation, and sports at 0.08 percent," he noted.

He stated that the February 2015 deflation was mostly due to the decline in the prices of gasoline, bird's eye chili, red chili, purebred chicken eggs, onions, diesel oil, and cement.
