REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Agus Martowardojo urged people here on Thursday, March 5, to not worry about the current rupiah exchange rate, which dropped to a Rp 13,000 level against the US dollar this week.

"The depreciation was a result of overseas influences. In general, the condition of the rupiah is good," he stated.

According to the BI Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR BI) on Thursday, the rupiah was traded at Rp 13,022 against the dollar, a depreciation from Rp 12,963 per dollar the day before.

Martowardojo said that the current depreciation was higher due to the impacts of more foreign factors than domestic ones, and still reflected Indonesia's economic fundamentals. "Indonesia's economic condition is good on the whole. There is no need to worry over the rupiah rate," he emphasized.

Martowardojo further noted that BI had, in fact, already anticipated the current development. He affirmed that the central bank would always standby in the market to maintain stability of the rupiah, and would not hesitate to intervene when needed.

"We would not say intervention, but you can see what BI has already done. BI will be in the market to control the rupiah's volatility," he remarked.
