Ministry of Public Works revitalizes flood control facilities

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Public Works revitalized flood control facilities and also maintains coastal protection.

Director General of Water Resources in Ministry of Public Works, Moch Hasan explained that several steps to anticipate flood control were through the build of flood control infrastructure along 298.77 kilometers (KM), rehabilitation of flood control along 182.13 KM, as well as operation and maintenance of flood control infrastructure along 2,100 KM.

The development was made to expand protection of 26,704 hectares of protected lands. Government also increased coastal protection and reduced abrasion through the construction of coastal protection infrastructure along 87.19 KM, securing rehabilitation of coastal along 4.87 KM and coastal infrastructure maintenance along 62.1 KM.

"Development of infrastructure is carried out in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua," Hasan said recently.

This revitalization is expected to anticipate potential flooding in rainy season this year. Flood prone areas can be suppressed. Currently there are nine flood prone areas, namely Jakarta, Bengawan Solo River (Central Java and East Java), Citarum River (West Java), Mount Bawakaraeng (South Sulawesi), and crater of Mount Ijen (Easy Java).
