REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- The Muslim youth in East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, have been actively involved to help secure the procession of Good Friday in the area. It was a routine activity for them.

"Every year, Muslims are always involved, but this year, the coordination is much better than in the previous years. Earlier in the day, the local police had urged the Muslim youth to be involved in securing the Good Friday procession next Friday," East Flores Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Chairman Ahmad Bethan remarked on Monday.

He said the Muslim youth will play a role in securing the Good Friday procession to take place in Larantuka, the capital of East Flores District.

He noted that few weeks ago, the East Flores Police had invited the MUI to request additional Muslim youth to assist in ensuring security during the celebration.

"This year, the coordination is better, and two weeks ago, we had sent the names of dozens of youth to the police to ensure security. However, two days ago, there was additional demand," he revealed.

He noted that in addition to facilitating the security arrangements, all Muslims are required to disseminate information on this Good Friday procession to the pilgrims.

The procession of Good Friday, to fall on March 30, 2018, this year, is a sacred tradition in Catholic religion to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. The tradition has been followed since five centuries in Larantuka.

The religious tradition, which is a Portuguese heritage, has been followed for more than five centuries when the Portuguese spread the Catholic religion and traded sandalwood in the Nusa Tenggara Islands.

The procession of Good Friday is also an annual agenda of the East Flores local government to promote spiritual tourism to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
