REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAMBI — Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin asked santri (Islamic schools students) to be pioneers in establishing national unity. When other Islamic groups get the influence of radicalism that can endanger the integrity of the state, santri are expected to be consistent in the Islamic path with an Indonesian vision.

Lukman statement came during the opening of Nusantara Santri Scout Campaign (PPSN) V at Abdurrahman Sayoeti Musa Campsite, in Sungai Gelam, Muaro Jambi, Jambi Province. He said the camp activity is one of the efforts to mobilize the unity of young generation.

"This camp is one of the efforts to mobilize the unity  of young generation and strengthen a sense of concern for the community, nation and state," Lukman said in a written statement received by Republika.co.id, on Friday (Oct 26).

Lukman said planting the value of idealism in the form of activities is important to make idealism is always embedded in young generation of Indonesia. Lately, he assessed many radical groups always confronted Islam against Indonesia. With Islamic symbols, these groups did things that have implications for dividing national unity.

However, Lukman said the history of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) has always been related to nationalism and patriotism. During colonial period, Islamic boarding schools became places to train fighters.

Nowadays, the pattern of life of some people has shifted. Lukman said the spirit of nationality and togetherness slowly began to wear off.

“But Islamic boarding schools must continue to inflate the importance of patriotism and love," Lukman stressed.

According to Lukman, Islamic boarding schools' effort to protect Indonesia is in line with vission and mission of the scout movement. He promised the activity such as PPSN will be held regularly.
