REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- Chairman of West Sumatra MUI, Buya Gusrizal Gazahar, has stated his thought on Islam Nusantara through his social media account on Thursday. He said the mandate has been fullfiled.

Buya Gusrizal said West Sumatra MUI stance against Islam Nusantara was not a misconception. They have seen clear indication that the concept of Islam Nusantara has been used by groups of secularist, liberalist and pluralist as their ride.

It has been going far from 'taswiyyatul manhaj' which uniformed the perception of Ahlussunnah wal-Jama'ah religious pattern, Buya Gusrizal said.

According to  Buya Gusrizal, the ulema failed to perform their duty to unify the people by letting the ummah lived in confusion related to the statements of people upholding the concept of Islam Nusantara. Moreover, the concept came with accusation that said 'Arabic Islam' equals to radical, invaders and so on.

Buya Gusrizal stated West Sumatra MUI made their stance not only by reading and hearing the concept of Islam Nusantara. West Sumatra MUI also has been observing the understanding and the implementation of the concept.

"The words, deeds, and attitudes of the people have been deviated from the concept," he explained.

According to Buya Gusrizal, West Sumatra MUI responded to recent cases. Therefore, the organization called on the people to return to the right path, namely Islam -- with no frills, as stated in Quranic verses of Ali ‘Imran 19 and 85, al-Maidah 3, and al-Shaff 7.

Meanwhile, if the concept of Islam Nusantara was speciefied to a culture and tradition, it could not be classified as proposition. Buya Gusrizal said all traditions and cultures should be filtered by the the concept of customs ('uruf) in the legal argument.

"We protect Ranah Minang (West Sumatra province) because we live in the middle of its society, and it became our obligation to stated that our people don't need the concept of Islam Nusantara," Buya Gusrizal reiterated.

President's special envoy for interfaith dialog and cooperation and civilization, Din Syamsuddin asked ulemas in West Sumatra to not reject Islamic concept that developed by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), namely Islam Nusantara (Islam Archipelago). He said there should be no refusal to the insight developed by fellow Muslims.

“There should be no such rejection. We must appreciate if there are Islamic groups or mass organizations thet develop certain concept, like NU,” said Din on Thursday (July 26).

MUI had responded the rejection. According to MUI deputy chairman Zainut Tauhid, the rejection of Islam Archipelago concept by MUI West Suamtra actually violated the nature and identity of MUI itself. Zainut said the MUI should be a forum for deliberation and friendship of Muslim ulemas from many organizations.
