REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has endorsed the nomination of Islamic Student Association (HMI) founder Lafran Pane to be declared a national hero.
The president will present the national hero's title to Lafran Pane on November 9, Mahfud MD, Coordinator of Presidium of the National Council of Indonesian Students Association Alumni Corps (KAHMI), said after meeting President Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Friday.
"Thank God, Mr President will present the hero's title to Mr. Lafran Pane on November 9," he remarked.
Mahfud revealed that he had proposed to the president two years ago to name the HMI founder as a national hero.
Lafran Pane initiated the creation of HMI on February 5, 1947, in Yogyakarta.
Born in Pagurabaan village on the slope of Mount Sibual-Bual in West Sumatra, Lafran Pane is considered to have contributed a lot to the nation and the state.
