REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Expert of information technology from Indonesia Islamic University (UII) Yogyakarta Hamid, urged Indonesian government to anticipate a war that utilizes information technology or cyber war.
"Government should strengthen websites that are considered underdeveloped, so it is less susceptible to cyber attack," said the Chairman of the Center for the Study of Digital Forensic Information Technology Faculty (FTI) Indonesian Islamic University (UII) in Yogyakarta, on Monday.
According to him, the government steps, through Ministry of Communication and Information and Ministry of Defense, to form 'cyber army' through various competitions and similar efforts were a good step that should be appreciated.
"Cyber competition that is often done by the government is actually also an attempt to protect the weaknesses of Indonesian websites," he said.
He said the dispute with Australia over spying allegations to Indonesian officials was not only being horrendous to public, but also trigger the raise of nationalism spirit from some elements of society.
It can be seen with the advent of action of some Indonesian hacker who claimed to have hacked several websites in Australia. It was a cyber attack that ultimately led to a reciprocal action.
"Some important web pages and servers, such as Garuda Indonesia and Angkasa Pura, were also successfully infiltrated by an anonymous group of Australia. It is one forms of war that took advantage from information technology," he said.
Hamid said, the fact that several Indonesian government websites hacked by hackers indicated that there were several weak points in such websites. So, basically, he said, it was not determined by the skill of a hacker, but because of the weakness of security systems.
Even so, he was not convinced that the culprit was hacker from Australia considering that so far there had been no evidence of the source of the hacker trace. The identity of the person who hacked Indonesia websites remains to be proven.
"Moreover, the websites attacked by anonymous Indonesia were not those related directly to Australian government as the party which have been allegedly tapped Indonesian officials," he said.
