REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DENPASAR -- A regional meeting of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) for Asia and the Pacific held in Sanur, Bali, is beneficial for the preservation of culture in the era of globalization, Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Mantra stated.

"It is a challenge in Denpasar to find a solution for the network of historic cities of the world and an opportunity to build a network of sustainable heritage by involving the younger generation," he noted in Sanur on Monday.

According to Rai Mantra, Denpasar is already organizing activities to strengthen the role of "sekaa teruni stripling," or groups of young men and women, cruising heritage activities, and early childhood education through cultural activities.

In addition, he said, the youth group had annually conducted evaluation and workshops to discuss the culture that currently exists in the era of globalization.

Earlier, Deputy Mayor of Gyeongju Korea Sang-Wook had remarked that Denpasar was chosen as the host for the OWHC meeting, which will be held for four days until Wednesday (July 10), due to its strategic location and cultural similarity.

"Denpasar and Korea share similarities in terms of preservation of their culture. In our area, there is also a rule for managing construction zones. Here, in Denpasar, rules have also been outlined for the height of buildings," Sang-Wook, accompanied by Regional Secretariat OWHC Asia-Pacific Ja-Hyun Jang, stated.

He hoped the OWHC Asia-Pacific meeting will serve as a platform to share experiences and provide recommendations in the areas of education and town planning procedures. The meeting not only discussed issues related to heritage cities in the Asia-Pacific but also demonstrated cultural preservation to the world.

Director-General of Intangible Culture Heritage of the Asia-Pacific Region Huh Kwon remarked that all local governments had the obligation to preserve their culture by ensuring synergy through the strengthening of youth for the preservation of culture.

"Strategic meetings should be held to strengthen the local governments by offering insights to the community, which is related to harmonizing the conservation of physical and cultural heritage and non-corporeal order," he added.
