REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BENGKULU -- A maritime expedition named Ekspedisi Widya Nusantara (E-Win) to be carried out by the Indonesian Research Institute (LIPI) will explore Enggano Island located 106 miles from Bengkulu city.

"The E-Win team will research three scientific fields this year. The research will take one year," Coordinator of LIPI's Social and Public Science Department Dedy Supriadi said here on Saturday.

The scientific fields that will be studied by the expedition team on the island, which covers an area of 40 square kilometers, include oceanography, biodiversity, and social science.

"Enggano is unique as the island never unites with the island of Sumatra," Supriadi pointed out.

According to the LIPI coordinator, this condition indicates that the island has a number of unique flora and fauna species, geological elements, and socio-cultural and traditional political systems applied by the Enggano tribes.

Five traditional tribes inhabit Enggano Island. These are the Kauno, Kaitora, Kaahua, Kaharuba and Kaharubi tribes that still follow ancient legal norms.

"Nine researchers will study the socio-cultural elements on the island and the relationship between the traditional communities and natural resources," Supriadi stated, adding that the research team comprises experts in the political, historical, anthropological, economic, and linguistics fields.

He further noted that the team will frame a recommendation on the tribes in Enggano and their activities related to social, political, legal and cultural issues as well as natural resources management.

"The recommendation is expected to be considered an acknowledgement of Enggano's own territories," Supriadi affirmed.
