Pempek to become national cultural heritages

REPUBLIKA, PALEMBANG -- Governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin proposed empek-empek or pempek as national cultural heritage. Pempek is traditional food from Palembang made of fish and tapioca flour.

"Dulmuluk and songket have previously been determined as national cultural heritage. Now, Governor proposes pempek and pinang coffee," Acting Head of Public Relations in South Sumatra Provincial Government, Irene Camelyn said on Tuesday.

Pempek and pinang coffee will be registered as naional cultural heritage to Ministry of Education and Cultural then to UNESCO. Pempek and pinang coffee is quite popular in Ogan Komering Ulu community as traditional arts.

Now, Dulmuluk has been registered as historical heritages at Directorate for Internalization of Values and Cultural Diplomacy in Ministry of Education and Culture with code of 2011001450, while songket has been registered as cultural heritage of traditional handicrafts category of fashion textiles, carvings, art, culinary, equipment, and game for national intangible cultural heritage with code of 2010000778.
