REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia and Iran held the 7th meeting of the Bilateral Consultation Committee, from Sept 24 to 26, to discuss the latest developments of their bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Iranian Vice Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi warmly welcomed the visit by Director General of Asia-Pacific and African Affairs of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Desra Percaya, to attend the meeting, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran stated in a press statement released on Thursday.

According to Sarmadi, Indonesia, which has the largest Sunni Muslim population, and Iran, which has the largest Shi'ite Muslim population in the world, should work closely to demonstrate the image of Islam, which brings peace in the world.

He remarked that the two countries should cooperate in finding a peaceful and dignified solution to various problems faced by the Islamic world in recent years.

He mentioned various conflicts in several parts of the world, including the Middle East conflict, a civil war in Syria, terrorism and extremism by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and humanitarian crisis affecting Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

"The various conflicts require us to cooperate in fighting against violence and crushing terrorism and extremism wherever they emerge," he affirmed.

The Iranian government is also concerned about the latest situation in East Asia related to conflicts in the Korean Peninsula and the South China Sea and the US foreign policy, which has much influenced regional and global stability.

In response, Desra noted that Indonesia and Iran should take active part in maintaining the regional and global stability and peace through constructive mechanism.
