REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The United States' decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will jeopardize the peace building process in the Middle East, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Deputy Advisory Chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid stated. He led the party's delegation to deliver a letter of protest to the US Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday.

"We regret the stance taken by Donald Trump, who has ignored international votes through the refusal of 128 countries, or 75 percent of the UN member states in the general assembly. On the other hand, the United States often pledged to be a democratic country but has denied majority vote in the UN session," Hidayat who is also vice chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) noted in a statement.

The United States, which had earlier initiated a two-state solution to end the long-drawn Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is currently destroying the peace building process.

"The US' decision jeopardizes the peace process in the Middle East, and it will become increasingly difficult to create a two-state solution by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Hidayat told US Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Erin Elizabeth McKee, who received him at the embassy.

The United States' position, as a peace mediator between Palestinians and Israelis, has fallen, as the decision to move its embassy has demonstrated the former's alignment to Israel.

"Mahmoud Abbas even mentioned that the United States is no longer a good mediator of peace," Hidayat noted.

According to Wahid, the United States no longer guarantees the rights of Palestinians. In contrast, the United States has supported Israel that has committed crimes against humanity, rejected the UN resolutions, and endangered the existence of the Aqsa Mosque.
