Setya Novanto ready to face e-ID graft case verdict

Prosecutors demand 16 years prison for Setya Novanto

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former House of Representatives (DPR) speaker, Setya Novanto will face verdict in the trial of e-ID card graft case on Tuesday (April 24). His lawyer, Maqdir Ismail said his client is in good health and ready to hear the verdict that would be read by panel judges at Jakarta Corruption Court.

"Mr Setya is in good condition and hopefully there is no serious problem with his health and he is ready to listen the verdict that will read by panel judges," said Maqdir on Tuesday (April 24).

Presiding judge is Yanto who also Central Jakarta District Court head. Meanwhile, members of panel judges are Frangki Tambuwun, Emilia Djajasubagja, Anwar and Ansyori Syaifudin.

The members of panel judges are the same judges who convicted three other defendants in e-ID card graft case. The defendants were former director general of Population and Civil Registration Ministry of Home Affairs Irman, former director of information administration management Ministry of Home Affairs Sugiharto, and businessman Andi Agustinus or known as Andi Narogong.

Meanwhile, as the defendant in e-ID card graft case, Novanto allegedly has intervened in budgeting and procurement of goods and services in e-ID project in 2011 until 2013. The abuse of authority was done by him to benefit himself and enrich others and corporations.

Novanto was accused guilty for collecting US$7.3 million and a Richard Mille watch, worth US$135 thousand, causing a loss of Rp2.324 trillion to the state from the electronic ID project worth Rp5.9 trillion. The money and watch were given by Andi Narogong and PT Bimorf Lone Indonesia Director Johannes Marliem, as part of compensation for Novanto's role in helping to smoothen the budgeting process of e-ID card procurement.

Novanto was charged 16 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 billion or six months confinement. Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also requested Setya to pay replacement money, in accordance with the money he received and minus Rp 5 billion that he had returned to the KPK. In addition, his right to be public servant for five years will be revoked.
