Jakarta police arrest 180 sellers of bootleg liquor in raid

The police raid 147 locations within the Jakarta Police's territory.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta Police arrested 180 sellers of bootleg liquor during its raid conducted on Apr 1-19, Chief Inspector of the Jakarta Police General Idham Azis stated. The arrest was made at 147 locations within the Jakarta Police's territory.

Of the total arrested people, the police have continued the legal proceedings against 15 of them, while 165 others are under the police's observation.

The police have also seized 39,834 bottles of liquor of various brands. Azis noted that the biggest haul was made in West Jakarta where the police had seized 8,716 bottles of liquor from 45 locations.

The Jakarta Police established 15 task force teams to monitor liquor distribution and crimes following the deaths of dozens of people in the capital city after consuming bootleg liquor.

"The raid was also conducted ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Asian Games sporting event,"  Azis noted here on Friday.

As many as 33 people had died after consuming bootleg liquor in Jakarta, while 18 others were under intensive care in hospitals.
