REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WAISAI -- Waifoi and Warimak kampongs are bird-friendly locations, as the locals are committed to preserving the wild birds, according to Maurits Kafiar, Fauna and Flora International Indonesia Program (FFI-IP) coordinator in Raja Ampat, West Papua.

Since 2014, the FFI-IP in Raja Ampat had implemented a conservation program involving the local people of Warimak on Mayalibit Bay, Kafiar stated here, Thursday.

Owing to widespread public awareness, two kampongs have become ecotourism destinations in Raja Ampat, Kafiar, in charge of biodiversity and people's empowerment, remarked.

Umukia Raja or Raja Shelduck (Tadorna Radjah) are often spotted playing in the homes of the local people. "It is unique, so tourists and bird lovers call Waifoi and Warimak in Mayalibit Bay, Raja Ampat, as bird-friendly kampongs," he remarked.

Traditional and unique kampongs have homestay accommodation facilities for domestic and foreign tourists and also tourist guides, he pointed out.

Virgin forests located near the kampongs are the habitats of red Paradise or Cenderawasih birds (paradisaea rubra).

"Tourists can also enjoy the falls and beautiful sea. Besides this, local residents of the two kampongs invite tourists to catch fish in the evening using traditional fishing tools, which is a local tradition," he added.
