EU Ambassador visits Papua to see development

This year, the EU plans to receive proposals to help people in Indonesia.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The EU Ambassador to Indonesia, Vincent Guérend, has commenced his four-day visit to Papua Province, including the provincial capital of Jayapura and Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya District. The visit aims to directly see and obtain information about the latest developments in the province.

Vincent wanted to look Papua's economic development, local elections, governance, human rights, and environmental protection programs, according to a statement received by Antara here on Tuesday. This visit to Papua is the second time for Guérend since he was assigned to Indonesia in September 2015.

The EU Ambassador is scheduled to meet various stakeholders of administrative officials, community representatives, and people.

"The EU has good relations with Indonesia. We are working together in various fields, such as trade, climate change management, governance, democracy, and human rights. Many of the EU's development cooperation programs in Indonesia have directly benefited the province and people, for example, in health, education, climate change mitigation, and sustainable economic development," Guérend remarked.

In addition to having discussions with the local administration, Guérend will hold meetings with people, specifically to discuss environment and climate change management and future assistance to building capacity and providing advocacy.

This year, the EU plans to receive proposals to help people in Indonesia, especially those living in disadvantaged areas.

The EU is also reviewing studies to support the protection of the Coral Triangle of Sulu Sulawesi and small-scale palm oil producers in order to help them produce sustainably.

Guérend will also visit some of the health and forestry projects in Papua, which are funded by the EU.

A grant of 2.5 million Euro for the Participatory Monitoring by the Civil Society of Land-Use Planning for Low-Emissions Development Strategy (ParConMon) Program has contributed to sustainable green development in Papua.

The project is being implemented by the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) in three districts, namely Jayapura, Merauke, and Jayawijaya, to enhance local people's capacity to use sustainable natural resources and access environmental services.

The EU Ambassador also plans to visit hospitals in Wamena to monitor the administrative efforts in providing quality healthcare services for AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.

The EU and its member states are major contributors to the Global Fund against AIDS, TB, and malaria (GFATM). The amount of GFATM funding support for Indonesia has reached 44 percent.
