REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday revealed that the Saudi Government did not notify the Indonesian Government on the execution of Zaini Misrin, an Indonesian migrant worker accused of murdering his Arab employer. Misrin, an Indonesian migrant worker from Bangkalan, Madura, East Java, was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering his employer, and was executed on Sunday at around 11.30 a.m. local time.

"I would like to confirm that the Indonesian Government did not receive any notification before the execution of Misrin," Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, stated at a press briefing here on Monday.

It is understandable since there is no obligation for the Saudi Government to notify foreign representatives about any execution, Iqbal revealed.

"However, as two countries sharing good relationship, it would have been appropriate if the Saudi Government had notified the Indonesian Government about the execution through its representatives," Iqbal explained.

Furthermore, Iqbal revealed that the execution took place even though the second judicial review request of the case, which was submitted by Misrin's lawyer, had not been concluded and answered.

Misrin arrived in Saudi in 1992 and had been working as a private driver. After returning to Indonesia, he entered Saudi Arabia again in 1996 to work with the same employer he had worked before.

Misrin was arrested by Saudi Police in 2004 after allegedly murdering his employer, Abdullah bin Umar. In November 2008, Misrin was sentenced to death by the Saudi court.

The Indonesian Government had facilitated Misrin's family to visit the migrant worker in Saudi twice.

Iqbal revealed that no one could interfere nor alter the death sentence, not even the King of Saudi Arabia, but the victim's heirs could spare the sword. However, the family of the victim's refused to forgive Misrin in the case.

Moreover, the Indonesian Government was not able to provide consular access and assistance to its citizens involved in law cases until 2008.

After the execution, Misrin's body was buried in a cemetery in Makkah.

Iqbal and some government officials visited Misrin's family, wife, and two children in Bangkalan, Madura, to deliver their deepest condolences over Misrin's fate.
