'Efforts to anticipate attack to religious figures is weak'

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Member of Commission III House of Representatives (DPR), Erma Suryani Ranik assessed the police's anticipation to the attack against a number of religious leaders that happened recently was too weak. She said the police should be active in preventing the incidents.

"I monitored informations about the attacks in several worship places and the incidents prooved that police's effort to anticipate it was so weak," said Erma who is a Democratic party's politician to Republika.co.id on Thursday (Feb 15).

Erma said political tension in Indonesia will increase ahead regional elections and presidential election. She asserted police should be aware to prevent attacks to religious figures so the incidents will not be a wild issue covered in medias. The spreading of hoax news that could trigger conflicts also should be prevented.

Erma asked the police to monitor and remain vigilant. She suspected the attacks to religious leaders recently might be planned by certain parties because the similar pattern. There were at least three attack cases against religious leader figures in the last three weeks. The first happened to Kiai Umar Basyri, the clerics at al Hidayah Islamic boarding school (pesantren) mosque in Cicalengka, Bandung on January 27.

Then the second attack case happened to preacher Prawoto as commander of the Central Leaders Brigade of Islam (Persis). The police confirmed that his death was caused by an attack by a person who suffered psychiatric disorder on February 1.

Third case experienced by student at Pesantren al Futuhat, Garut, West Java by six unknown perpetrators. Aside of those incidents, there was also a mentally ill man who carried a knife hiding on the at Tawakkal mosque Bandung City .

Erma encouraged the police to investigate the causes and roots of the cases. "In addition to their investigation, of course the real perpetrators must be tried in court," she said.
