REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) around 03.55 AM WITA (Indonesia Central Standard Time). The Metereology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed the earthquake's epicenter location was at 80 kilometres of Southeast Sikka regency.

"The earthquake's center is in around Sikka regency," said Head of BMKG Kupang and also Coordinator BMKG East Nusa Tenggara, Hasanudin on Monday (Feb 5).

BMKG also showed the epicenter of earthquake location was at 9,16 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 122,51 degrees East Longitude (BT). Precisely, it was located in the sea at a distance of 47 km of Hepang City, Sikka District, in a depth of 138 km.

Based on BMKG map, the impact of earthquake indicated the other areas have also potential shocks. Some of the areas are Lia, Ende, Sikka, Botang, and Waingapu, East Sumba on the second scale of SIG-BMKG (II-III MMI).

"The earthquake in those areas are felt weak and no potency to cause damage," Hasanuddin added.

Hasanudin explained that when viewed from the depths of his hypocenter, the earthquake was a kind of middle earthquake due to subduction activity. Based on the tectonic map map, in the Savu Sea region there is a subduction zone between the Indo-Australian plate against the Eurasian plate.

Based on BMKG analysis indicated that earthquake in the locations was generated by horizontal fault activity (strike-slip). Currently, BMKG said there is no aftershock activity.
