High-ranking police officers to serve as acting governors

The two high-ranking police officers to be placed in in West Java and North Sumatra.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- National Police is still reluctant to comment on the controversy about the news saying two high-ranking officials will be installed as acting governor in West Java and North Sumatra. Deputy Chairman of National Police Commissioner General Syafruddin said it was a discourse and not a police domain.

"It is the Ministry of Home Affairs's domain and not yet been decided," Syafruddin said at Police Science College, Jakarta, on Friday (January 26).

According to Syafruddin, the same policy ever been applied in 2015 elections. In Aceh, the ministry installed military official. Meanwhile, in West Sulawesi, police officer was appointed to serve as acting governor. "It's not something new," he said.

Previously, National Police spokesman, Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said there are two high-ranking police officers who will become the temporary acting governors in two provinces in Indonesia. He referred the statement came from National Police Deputy Chief Syafruddin.

"In the briefing, we have heard that there are two high-ranking police officers who will lead two provinces in Indonesia, which are West Java and North Sumatra," said Martinus on Thursday (January 25).

According to the information, Assistant to Police Chief of Operations Division (Asops) Inspector Geneneral M Iriawan to be installed as acting governor in West Java. Meanwhile, Police Internal Affairs Bureau (Propam) Chief Inspector General Martuani Sormin will be placed in North Sumatra province.

Martinus said the police will be replaced governor's duty in the two provinces due to regional election (pilkada) which will be held in this year. However, he said still could not conclude in detail the reason of it.

According to him, some police officers could serve the temporary government's position when needed. Carlo Brix Tewu, for example, ever carried out mandate as expert staff for ideology and constitution at Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister.
