No baby milk product contains salmonella in Indonesia: KPAI

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Commissioner of Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Sitti Hikmawatty said there is no impact related to salmonella contamination of French baby-milk producer in the country. People are advised not to worry about that case.

"The milk product is most likely not circulating in Indonesia, so our country doesn't become one of affected countries that experienced salmonella contamination," said Sitti on Tuesday (January 16).

In December 2017, French baby-milk producer Lactalis and health authorities in French have ordered a major international product recall because of fears of salmonella contamination. It was due to following 26 cases of children falling sick in France.

Many people in Indonesia, especially the mothers were afraid. According to the information, there were 12 million products in 83 countries has recalled because of fears of salmonella contamination.

Salmonella infection symptomps included severe diarrhoea, stomach camps and vomitting, and the illness cause by intestinal bacteria from farm animal. It is dangerous for the very young and elderly people because of the dehydration.

However, Sitti said KPAI already coordinated with the authorities who have duties of circulating milk product. She explained, based on the result of their coordination, there are no two France milk products, Picot and Milumel that registered on Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM). Thus, there was no importation of the France milk products to Indonesia.

Furthermore, Sitti said it will be better if all mothers in Indonesia choose breast milk than formula milk. She said that breast milk can optimize child growth. In addition, breast milk also contain immunity substances that play a role in body's naturally immune.

"So keep exclusive breastfeeding to baby and starts from newborn until 6 months old then they can be introduced with complementary food," Sitti added.
