REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has set the target of its net profit for 2018 at Rp1.7 trillion, up 21.4 percent from its 2017 profit prognosis of Rp1.4 trillion.

The company has projected its income this year to increase to Rp21 trillion, higher than its income forecast of Rp17 trillion last year, PT KAI President Director Edi Sukmoro said after attending a general meeting of the company's shareholders at the State Enterprises Ministry building here on Wednesday.

"The 21.4 percent profit hike is very good. It is high in view of the fact that KAI is a public service company rather than pure business company. It means that its profit must be returned to its service," he said.

Throughout 2017, the number of train passengers reached 398 million, outstripping the company's target of 379 million passengers.

The number of train passengers increased significantly as many travelers switched to trains to avoid congestion.

"Income from cargo transport also increase although the volume of cargoes fell short of target," he said.

He said PT KAI has set itself the target of carrying 50 million tons of cargoes this year as compared to 40 million tons last year.

"In 2017 the target of train passengers was achieved, while the transport of cargoes reached 91 percent of the target," he said.
