REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) had transported some 4.85 million passengers during Christmas and the New Year 2018 festivities, KAI President Director Edi Sukmoro stated at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Sukmoro noted that the number of passengers recorded at 4.85 million during Christmas and the New Year 2018 festivities, which lasted from December 22, 2017, to January 7, 2018, increased by five percent compared with that during the corresponding period last year.

"Transportation services during the Christmas and New Year ran smoothly, with zero accidents reported," he revealed.

Of the total passengers, some 571,176 were executive travelers, 282,623 business-class visitors, 1.72 million economy-class passengers, and 2.27 million passengers from other class.

In the meantime, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan remarked on Monday that he will evaluate the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project that had yet to be completed.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Jakarta-Bandung railway project was held in January 2016.

"The evaluation will be conducted in the next month to find the problems. The president has instructed me to evaluate the project," Pandjaitan revealed here on Monday.

The president has ordered Pandjaitan to study the project along with Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Thomas Lembong and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno.

The senior minister pointed out that the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project will offer connectivity to the Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, West Java.

He stated that the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs will oversee the project.

"As the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs oversees the transportation ministry, the project will be coordinated by me," the minister noted.

Meanwhile, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi noted after a coordination meeting that the evaluation was aimed at finding a solution for the project.

"The deadline for completion of the project will be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday (Jan 9)," the minister stated.

The minister remarked that the high-speed train will not be connected to the Patimban Port that offers logistics support.

"We have an idea to connect the Kertajati airport and Soekarno-Hatta airport. Thus, the people will have a choice," the minister stated.
