Golkar appoints Airlangga Hartarto as chairman

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The plenary meeting of Golkar Party Central Executive Board (DPP) on Wednesday (December 13) evening has decided to appoint Airlangga Hartarto as the party's new chairman. 

The Industry Minister replaced Setya Novanto, who is currently a defendant in high profile e-ID card graft case.

Airlangga's appointment will also be reported in national leadership meeting on December 18. Then, the country's second largest party is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting (Munaslub) to officially inaugurate him as a chairman on December 19-20, in accordance with Golkar Party statute.

His appointment as Golkar Party new chairman by acclamation has been predicted. Airlangga became most favourable candidate, including among the Golkar Party's Regional Boards throughout Indonesia, Goklar Party figures, and organizations.

Appointment of Airlangga by acclamation was predicted to happen in the plenary session of DPP Golkar Party following the heavy debate during the determination of Munaslub time. 

However, in plenary meeting, as revealed by Golkar Party's executive chairman, Nurdin Halid that the plenary meeting considered the position of Golkar Party chairman was empty because Novanto's legal problem.

"As Golkar Party chairman position is empty, as Article 14 statute is stated that the filling of office between time is done through plenary meeting and reported in Rapimnas," said Nurdin in Golkar Office, Slipi, Jakarta, Wednesday (December 13) night.

The appointment of Airlangga by acclamation has closed the opportunity for the other Golkar Party cadres, who also become candidates of its party leader. Among others were Aziz Syamsuddin, Siti Hediati Hariyadi (Titiek Soeharto), and Idrus Marham.

Nurdin asserted that Airlangga's appointment as general chairman of Golkar Party has accommodated the expectations and wishes from Golkar cadres throughout Indonesia. 

On other hand, he said in the plenary session Aziz Syamsuddin withdrew from nomination, so that the plenary then decided Airlangga in acclamation.

He also said that all decisions was in accordance with the mechanism procedure. Nurdin admitted the party already had communication with Titiek Soeharto.

"Yes Titiek has also has met Airlangga, so the decision is in accordance with the mechanism and procedure," Nurdin added.
