REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chief of the Indonesia Police General Tito Karnavian inaugurated the 2nd ASEAN Traffic Police Forum (ATPF) 2017 that serves as a platform to improve traffic safety and share experiences.
"I officially inaugurate the 2nd ATPF in the presence of the heads of traffic police from ASEAN countries," Karnavian noted in his opening speech at the Hotel Borobudur, Wednesday.
More safe means of transportation are needed in the current era of freedom to tackle several challenges, such as the flow of logistics, services, capital, investment, and skills.
However, Karnavian pointed to the high rate of traffic accidents. The WHO had recorded in 2004 that traffic accidents ranked ninth in the list of top 10 causes of death in the world.
The organization has forecast that traffic accidents will be ranked fifth by 2030 behind coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, and respiratory infection.
Moreover, Karnavian noted that high incidents of traffic accidents were reported in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos in the ASEAN.
"Meanwhile, the traffic situation in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore is good. We congratulate the countries," Karnavian stated, adding that both countries have low incidents of traffic accidents in the ASEAN region.
The United Nations General Assembly in 2010 had also published five main guidelines to reduce the death rate due to traffic accidents, such as by improving the highway safety traffic and road safety management; increasing safety awareness on traffic, vehicles, and of drivers; as well as reducing the post-accident response time.
Karnavian also shared Indonesia's experiences in managing the homecoming flow.
"We are also modernizing to manage the homecoming flow. We were able to reduce the number of traffic accidents this year," he remarked.
Indonesia is hosting the ATPF 2017 in Jakarta and Bali on November 14-18, 2017. The event is being attended by delegations from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, and Vietnam.
