US govt must explain travel ban on TNI chief: HIkmahanto

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Professor of International Law at University of Indonesia (UI), Hikmahanto Juwana supported government move through Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask for explanation from US Embassy in Indonesia regarding travel ban against TNI Chief General Gatot Nurmantyo. 

"If the problem is not properly addressed by the US government, it will result in Indonesia-US relations," Hikmahanto said in Jakarta on Sunday (October 22).

Hikmahanto admitted he was surprised with incident that happened to General Nurmantyo. Moreover, the TNI Commander had received an official invitation from his partner, US Commander General Joseph F. Durford Jr, to attend Chiefs of Defense Conference on Country Violent Extremist Organization event in Washington DC.

General Gatot Nurmantyo, his wife and entourage have arranged for visas and other administration needed to prepare for departure.

Hikmahanto questioned on the channel used to informed General Gatot which was not an official channel. The travel ban was informed by Emirates Airlines. 

"If the government receive inadequate clarification, we must give really strong protest and if necessary to call Indonesian Ambassador to US, Budi Bowoleksono to come home and have consultation," Hikmahanto explained.
