REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Fisheries of Sri Lanka. The cooperation between two countries is to improve the economy especially in the fisheries sector.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said Indonesia and Sri Lanka signed new partnership related to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Sri Lanka wanted the agreement because Sri Lanka felt the natural resources of their sea has been stolen by others.

With the same ocean region with Indonesia, Sri Lanka hoped the cooperate will eradicate the illegal fishing in the sea area belonged to them.

"Sri Lanka is share a beach with Aceh, in one area. So the agreement related to IUU," Susi said at the Presidential Palace, Wednesday.

In addition, Sri Lanka and Indonesia will cooperate in the fish trade. Indonesia exported fishes to Sri Lanka. However, the absence of a free trade agreement made the fish price from Indonesia was expensive when entered Sri Lanka.

There will be an agreement about fish price that enter to Sri Lanka could be affordable in terms of price. "They (Sri Lanka) imported the fish because their ability of fisheries is not like us," Susi said.
