Jokowi reminds Jakarta students to avoid drugs

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) reminded thousand of elementary, junior, high school, and vocational school students to avoid all kinds of drugs, including cannabis and methamphetamine.

"I want all the children to fully aware the danger of narcotics," he said when campaigning on the danger of drugs, pornography and violence to Jakarta province pupils at Hall D JI-Expo, Kemayoran, Jakarta, Wednesday (October 11).

Jokowi warned the students not to use drugs, not even to try it. He asked them to be cautious with stranger who offers candy for it might contain illicit drug.

"Avoid cannabis, methamphetamine, cocain, heroin as it all share the same danger," he reiterated when talking to Rian, one of the student of Angkasa 2 Senior High School.

Jakarta is home to the highest number of drug abusers in Indonesia. Based on data from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), there were around five million drugs users nationwide, with many living in the capital.

President also asked the students not to bully others, whether at school or outside the school. He explained bullying has negative impact to child's development. 

"We do not want the next generation to be rude and intimidating. We want all the children to behave, to present their best character," he said.

Jokowi added, Indonesia needed its youth to be healthy and able to compete in global era.
