REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met her counterpart of Palau, Fausrina K Rehurer-Marugg, on the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday to discuss the acceleration of negotiations on maritime border issues.

"There is one sea border issue that has not yet been settled, and we are trying to solve it," Marsudi stated.

Palau is an island country in the western part of Pacific Ocean that shares borders with Indonesia and the Philippines.

The two countries are also seeking border settlement with the Philippines, she noted.

"Palau has appreciated Indonesian involvement to settle the ocean issues," she added.

As a common archipelago state, Indonesia participated in the fight with developing island countries in the framework of preventing the impact of climate change on small islands, she remarked.

In the bilateral meeting with Palau, Indonesia also conveyed its bid to become the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council from 2019-2020.

Marsudi is scheduled to hold more than 70 bilateral meetings with friendly countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to garner support for the country's bid for non-permanent member of the UNSC.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla leads the Indonesian delegation at the UN meeting and is scheduled to give his speech before representatives from 193 UN member countries on Thursday.
